Different Hair Types

Its really important that you know what type of hair you have as this can make your life a lot easier. There are 4 real characteristics of hair and once you identify what type you have you will be able to choose the correct products and the best way to style your hair

1. Diameter. A common sense guide to the width of your hair is to pull a single strand of hair and lay it out flat on a piece of plain paper. If the hair is hard to see or feel between your fingertips, then you have fine hair. If the hair looks thick and appears to be textured, then the hair is coarse. If your hair is somewhere in-between, then you have medium width.

You will find that medium hair is roughly about the thickness of a piece of sewing thread so this is a good way of checking too.

2. Density. Different people have different levels of hair density. This can be determined by taking a one inch area on your scalp and counting the number of hairs in this area. A phototrichogram is a close up photo of individual hair strands and this can be used too. Its important to know how dense your hair is for many reason such as choice of style, choice of products and choice of hair dryer.

3. Porosity. Porosity of hair is simply divided into low, medium and high categories. This will affect how well your hair retains water and therefore how easy it is to dry. There is not much you can do about this but there are various products such as alkaline based ones for low porosity and oil based products for high.

4. Hair shape. Everybody has a different shape that their hair naturally grows in. Again there is not much you can do about this apart from getting a pair. It is good to watch how a professional hair dresser dries your hair and see if you can pick up any tips as this is the best way to learn

There are loads of instructional videos available online and they really are useful if you are an absolute beginner. This video below gives you 7 simple tips to follow and its really easy to copy the technique and get a good dry

What to look for in a Hair Dryer

1. Moderate wattage between 1600 and 2000w

2. Ionic or Ceramic anti frizz technology

3. Low and medium heat settings

4. Adjustable speed settings

5. Diffuser and concentrating attachments

Its fairly common sense to know that fine hair does best when not under put under stress. Pressure from high air speed, combined with heat from a dryer can create an environment that is damaging to already fragile, fine hair. Fine hair responds best with cooler temperatures, so a dryer with the capacity for cool or warm temperature settings, with air speed of no more than 2000 watts, can help keep fine hair healthy and looking good.
