Philips Lumea BRI956/00 Prestige IPL Hair Removal Device Review

By  Geoff Magee

Philips Lumea BRI956/00 Prestige IPL Hair Removal Device Review

Philips make an extensive range of hair removal products but this Philips Lumea BRI956/00 Prestige IPL Hair Removal Device is something that's new for home use. Its an IPL hair removal system using light to remove hair from body and face. It is derived from professional light technology, the IPL is clinically tested for safe and effective use at home. No longer do you have to go to a salon for this type of treatment

At around £575 RRP this is an expensive purchase but it seems that they might be well worth the money. If you shop around a bit on line you can sometimes find them around £470, we actually found them in several places online at this reduced price The user ratings are off the scale with the product getting some of the best reviews we have seen. They at the very top end of the market and they get 4.5 out of 5 in the ratings.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and until recently this type of treatment was only available in salon. It is the latest innovation and different option to waxing or shaving and is a lot easier on the skin. Its actually as quick, if not quicker as these more tradition methods. Under arms take a few minutes for instance.

You do need to keep in mind that it does take several treatments to totally remove hair. The manufacturer says that it needs 4 treatments but its more like double that in the real world. Be prepared to be patient with this type of treatment but you will find the results are well worth the wait.

Obviously this product is the latest cutting edge technology and is easily everything you would expect for this price level of product. It has an superb build quality and from the reviews it seems its well worth the money. This will genuinely allow you to do IPL treatments in the comfort of your own home.

Is it really worth the money

Spending this type of money on an IPL device is going to take a bit of convincing, but if you think of the money you might save over the years, whether you get salon waxes or shave at home with an electric or manual razor, it will even out eventually. For most people it's about the time and hassle rather than the money. People with darker hair who are likely to get the best results are also the people who struggle with particularly visible hair, so really that's a perfect match up

As I have said before the full RRP for this Philips IPL is £575 but we found it very easy to find it online in several places for around £475, so its well worth shopping around to see if you can find it on offer

What Buyers Say About the Philips Lumea

Well..... never before have we seen 92% of buyers loving a product. This must be something really special indeed!

Over 6 out of 10 users rating this clipper 5 out of 5 and a further 28% rating them 4 out of 4, we know that 92% of buyers have rated this product extremely highly. We know they are great, really great, so obviously they must work extremely well.

What users actually say is this simple. "it works" and I get the feeling that many buyers were surprised but very pleasantly surprised at that!

Without much analysis we found that over 9 out of 10 buyers rated this as well above average product. There are loads of reviews on this product so we are not working with a small amount of information. Hundreds have been sold and most people loved this product

If we consider all the ratings and reviews, we have to think that this product is something special, even at the price. Overall 4.5 of of 5 in the rating is even slightly misleading as the product would be even higher if it were not for a few rogue bad reviews. I would go as far as to say that this is a 10 out of 10 product or as near to that as is reasonably possible

  • Easy to use
  • Permanent hair removal
  • Pain free
  • Does full body and face
  • Can be used corded or cordless
  • Very expensive
  • Takes repeated sessions

Is IPL right for you

Braun Silk-expert IPL is as its most effective on light to medium skin tones with most hair types ranging from blonde to dark brown or black. The device is at its least effective on very blonde, red, grey or white hair because smaller amount of melanin does not absorb the light just so easily.

Our Summary of the Braun Silk-expert BD5009

Overall we would recommend this system especially for your most sensitive areas like under the arms and the bikini line, which are quick and easy to do and a nuisance to deal with normally. Not having to shave under your arms every few days is a delight.

I should also point out that the product does have a life span of 14,000 flashes. But by our calculations, this is enough for 12 years of use on lower legs, bikini line, and underarms. By then, those follicles will be toast!

What Exactly is IPL

Many people are using away at this technology without understanding how it actually works. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a relatively new technology and can be used to perform different skin treatments of which hair removal is one.The technology uses a high-powered flashgun to deliver an intense pulse of light on to the skin , usually you will be able to see the pulses.

Different filters can be used used to produce the required wavelength and to filter out damaging ultra violet light. The light produced then has a has a range that targets specific structures, for instance the melanin in your hair that becomes heated until it beaks down and is then reabsorbed by the body.

IPL is similar in some ways to  laser treatments as  they both use light to heat to totally kill the hair. Lasers only produce a single wavelength of light which typically matches only one chromophore, and hence only one condition, so there are different laser types for different treatments. IPL can use a wider spectrum that can be controlled and filtered, allowing it to be used against several conditions.
