Home Hair Cutting Tips-How To Cut Your Own Hair

By  Enda

Most men start cutting their own hair at home for one of two reasons:

  1. Fed up paying out to a barber or hairdresser
  2. They get to the stage when the hair is thinning and they just want to keep it tidy

Learning how to cut your own hair at home has never been easier. I thought I should offer you a few simple tips that will make it even easier for you. If you follow these you will not go too far wrong. Below you will find a short, but very useful video, that will help you to get started quickly.

Tip 1 – Get Set-up First

You are going to need a pair of scissors, some hair clippers with a few clipper combs, a cape and a neck brush. That is pretty much all you will ever need. I always recommend a cape to stop the hairs getting down your neck as those are really irritating. If you haven’t got one of those, then an old towel will certainly help.

These days you can buy a set of home hair clippers, that have all those bits and pieces to help get you started. Check out our top 10 list here.

Tip 2 – Wet Your Hair

Before you try cutting your hair, it is best to wash it with a good shampoo and conditioner as that makes it a lot easier to cut. So after you have that done, then comb it out and put it into your normal style that you like to have. If you have a parting make sure that is exactly where you want it to be. Take your time with this as it is very important.

(If you have curly or wiry hair then do not wet it – it tends to naturally spring upwards and if you cut when wet, then you will end up with a very short hair cut) I have seen that go very wrong indeed. If in doubt, do your first cut when it is dry, and see how that turns out.

Tip 3 – The Actual Cut

Work with a small area of hair at the time, starting on one side, and then doing the other side. Just make sure they look even in the mirror. Don’t rush this if you are just starting out. You want to start with a large comb on the clippers and work your way down until you get the right length for your hair.

Remember it is always better to cut a short amount at the time. That way if you do make a mistake, it can be fixed. Whack off a long piece of hair, and you will not be able to do much about that. Small cuts are always best, so don’t go crazy with the scissors initially.

Tip 4 – The Edges

Hair clippers can create a very clean edge. Remove any combs and just use the blade end and carefully start to make your distinct lines. Ideally have someone else to do this part for you. If you are on your own, then the only way to do this is by using two mirrors. With one mirror at the front and one behind the head, then you can actually view the back of your head.

The difficulty here is having enough hands to hold a mirror and the clippers. Ideally if you can have the mirrors in place and can keep both hands free, that will work much better.

This is another useful video with a pretty cool name.

As you can see from both of the videos this is a lot easier to do than you may first think. That said, just be patient if starting out, and don’t go scissor happy.

Tip 5 – Clean Your Equipment

When you have finished and it looks the way you want, then just take a few minutes and tidy up and clean your equipment and leave it ready for the next time. Don’t put this off as having hairs on your clippers, or any type of damp will over time damage your clippers, and you don’t want that.

We would also highly recommend applying a little clipper oil 3-4 times a year. This type of oil is cheap to buy, and will really help improve the lifetime of your clippers.

Hopefully these tips will help you out on how to cut your own hair at home. It is of course better to get someone else to do it. You can of course learn to do this on your own, especially if all you want is something like a number 2. Happy cutting.
